The Republic of Zambia is a state (752,614 km ², 11,668,000 inhabitants in 2005) of central-southern Africa.
It borders in the north with the Democratic Republic of the Congo,in the north-east with Tanzania,in the east with Malawi,in the south with Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, and in the west with Angola. It is landlocked.
Zambia is a presidential republic within the Commonwealth, a member of the UN and the African Union and associated with the European Union. The President is Rupiah Banda.
In the past, Zambia was known as Northern Rhodesia (by Cecil Rhodes). The present name is based on the Zambezi River.
