Interview with Rosa Egidio Masullo, Councillor of the City of Salerno, sponsoring the initiative of solidarity "Bottega ed oltre per altro"

We meet the lawyer Rosa Egidio Masullo, sponsoring the initiative of solidarity "for other workshop and beyond," a project which aims to raise funds to give a development opportunity for women in the DRC town of Kabare.

Lawyer, how  was born in you the interest in Africa?
I grew up in the years when the most radical experience that a young man engaged in a Catholic church movement could do, was that ... maybe in mission in Africa! The years of my youth were those in which Africa, far, far away, black, very black, poor, very poor name. Even the parish in which I engaged a young priest departed, our pastor, a few years older than me, so much tension to the confidential ... UNITA '... as repeated in meetings to explain his departure ... I became an adult, mother, I left the commitment to church, preferring the hard work ... I chose the social and political. I met then, as a result of my political role, an old friend, a priest himself, he engaged in Africa and for Africa.

So we can say that he was to resurface your attention to this country, what did he propose?
Brought to the Commune of Salerno support for the creation of a center for vocational education in Africa, in the Kivu region, in Mugogo.A  centre 18 km far from the town of Bukavu, in an area still occupied by Rwanda. I told him that one of my unrealized desire was to visit "a land of mission" in Africa, to learn a bit over me ... to find the will and the sense of a commitment ... I drew before his regular visit to the Mission. I said yes without hesitation.

In what period was there  the trip?
It was the summer of 2002. My family encouraged me, although sometimes with some irony too. I started: with me two priests and an engineer, destination Tanzania-Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo. The objective was to follow the ongoing humanitarian activities in Mugogo to start a collaboration with the Bishop of Tanzania.

What is your impression gained from this experience?
We have traveled thousands of miles in three weeks: extraordinarily beautiful landscapes anywhere, a superb nature, sometimes lush yet unproductive. Thousands of miles of red dirt roads, along which met in Tanzania cycling men with their loads of life supplies, materials for the construction of their houses. And then ... so many men, women and children, walk more often in family groups with their weights and their loads. One thing struck me in that regard, particularly in Congo, mostly in the group to bring the weights were only women and children, men at the head of the group proceeded free of obstructions.

Perhaps it is for this reason that the project workshop is designed especially for women?
Our project aims to raise funds for $ 14,500 to send to the parish priest of the town of Kabare. Here I saw many pregnant women, many with their children on their backs, all with their loads for survival. Smiling, joyful, knowing that receive attention and commitment. Around the parish of this town of one hundred thousand inhabitants, a few kilometers from the city of Bukavu and around the young parish priest is to achieve a cooperative of women who, starting from the reactivation of an old mill spared from the war with Rwanda, can develop in Trade of cassava flour and other basic necessities. But the trip to Africa was also used to help people understand that now is the time for each, beyond the personal assessments and developing policies that can go, starting from 'to return to these brothers as over the centuries has been taken from them and what continue to steal ... through small gestures and changes in life styles, without overdoing it, but with the awareness that all beneficial and brings results. So I proposed to my friends and the Association "Amici del Vallo di Diano" to support the project's workshop to build a development opportunity for women to Kabare, but also for an experience of education and awareness to the values sharing, ethical development, critical consumption, cooperation and peace-maybe I disappointed my priest friend that I was expecting a more active contribution to its missionary project. I hope I understand. I do not thank you enough for the opportunity given me.

The headquarters of the workshop is in Polla, what does the Association plan for the immediate future?
The Bottega is always active for this summer there will be a series of initiatives in the Wall, traveling steps, some of which is an ongoing joint programming with the Giffoni Film Festival.
