The Republic of Congo (from 1969 to 1992 the Popular Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, Congo, or simply French Congo), is a country in Central Africa and a former French colony.
The capital is Brazzaville.
It borders in the north with Cameroon and the Central African Republic, in the east and south with the Democratic Republic of the Congo ,the south for a short stretch with Cabinda (Angola),in south-west overlooking the Gulf of Guinea and in the west it borders with Gabon .
The country is located in west-central African sub-Saharan Africa, astride the Equator.
In the south and east it has natural borders with Congo and its tributary, the Ubangi on the opposite bank of which stands the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the west overlooks the Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Guinea).
The territory is characterized by a flat coastal strip, proceeding towards the interior face of the hills first and then vast areas of plains covered with tropical forest.
Hydrography
The south-west Congo is crossed by several rivers, usually short, resulting in the Atlantic, the most important is the Kouilou, which is a good way of communication from the coast inland.
The rest of the country sends its waters to the river Congo, either directly (River Sangha, Likouala, Alima, etc..), or through the tributary Oubangui.
The Congo River is the first in the world for water flow.
Indeed Oubangui and Congo on the territory of the Republic only in part, because it forms the eastern border. The Congo River, which flows along the border about 750 miles, widens into a kind of very large lake basin, Stanley Pool (or pool Pool Malebo), on which face either the capital of Congo as that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
The Republic of Congo is a presidential republic, the current president is the General Denis Sassou Nguesso, in power since 1997 except for the period since 1992 until 1997.
